I enjoy Melkor and Sauron as characters as much as I enjoy the rest of The Gang™, and they’re always hella interesting. But I’m sorry, I just have… little to no sympathy for either of them? I cannot muster many feels for them. They’re horrible. I enjoy their horrible antics from a fictional standpoint but they’re still horrible.

yah this is 100% valid; i don’t see it too much, but i also hate the kind of reverse-purity-policing you see around sometimes: the backlash to purity-policing that is in fact just more purity policing to the tune of “if you don’t have sympathy for or constantly validate my sympathy for this murderer then you Don’t Get Fiction and that makes me better than you; also you’re probably oppressing me” cuz like…naw? sometimes? you just don’t have sympathy for a character. and other people do and that’s fine, and no one should pressure anyone to change how they engage with fiction if what they’re doing works for them & doesn’t hurt other people. idk i had a longish phase in the past where i couldn’t really sympathize with characters who weren’t people i’d sympathize with in real life (which not only ruled out murderers but also just..,more run-of-the-mill dickwads). that’s not (obviously lol) how i’m currently doing The Fiction but it was a fine mode and didn’t make me any less enlightened or whatever and served me at the time. 

tldr i hope you and others don’t feel pressured by us darklord-stans to like,,,,love exactly the same trash in exactly the same way. idk i hope u don’t mind me adding my dumb thoughts to ur post sorry if i’m Doing The Thing 

Oh no, I mostly agree and people DO relate to fiction differently and that’s totally fine. I just,,, in canon they remorselessly torture, enslave, and destroy and while the Feanorians are guilty of nasty shit, too, it’s nowhere near the same scale and I’m just baffled when people try to gloss over that or excuse it somehow. Like… you can enjoy ur dark lords but don’t try to tell me they didn’t deserve getting chucked into the Void when they weren’t even remotely sorry for being cosmic assholes? Like, it’s not a big deal, I’m just being salty and curmudgeonly. I just don’t get it.
