I love listening to old dudes at work bullshit about people who used to work there. It’s always like, “Man, when Steve Fuckwang worked here back in the day he could drive six forklifts at once and load two million trucks a day and everybody stood up and clapped. It was a different time.”

I heard something similar last week on construction – how fast this guy and his crew could sawcut and remove a bridge deck, the crazy shit he did on site and how much less planning went into it back then. And they sounded so impressed and like “gosh don’t ya just miss the good old days” but finished the story with “… And then that one guy was working and the section of deck he was saw cutting fell through unexpectedly, he fell in because he was standing on it and then the saw cutter fell on top of him and he died… That’s probably part of why there are so many more requirements for construction sites now” And they all nod solemnly and watch our saw cutting guy continue cutting (safely and meeting all ohsa requirements). I think the awareness of the issues with the awesome old days was what made it really weird.
