We had this one landlady. She was absolutely horrible. We lived in a small town and rented a horrible shack of a house. Originally it was 700 a month (which, ngl was overpriced compared to other Shack-like houses in the area), but when the town got the interest of the oil field, it was raised to 900 a month (and we paid utilities on top of that). Her excuse was that taxes were increased dramatically – they weren’t, not for the bit of property we were renting. But she did it to push us out, so she could make a bigger buck. After we moved out, she raised it again, to 970 bucks. She was just trying to take advantage of people that moved to that little town from out of state.

See, this lady already had a plumbing business and another business (that I can’t remember what it was), that were doing very well. She wasn’t left wanting. But lemme tell ya, she hated poor people (she also hated Hispanic people – the only reason she let us rent the place was because the other potential renters were Hispanic and we were white). She thought we were scum cause my dad left us, and my mom had to work extra hard at low-wage places to take care of us. She would come out of the blue to talk to us about fuck-all – which was an excuse to see if we were breaking any of her ridiculous rules so she could try and kick us out. The walls on that shack, I mean house, were so goddamned thin we could hear her talking shit about us before we opened the door to her knocking. From across the room.

I don’t trust landlords. They think, “well, if you don’t have enough money you don’t deserve to have shelter.” And they’d happily push anyone out if it means they can jack up the rent some more.
