the owing the company money thing is so LEGIT and fucked up.
about a week ago i was at the store before it opened doing fulfillment picks (items to be shipped out to customers from the store rather than a center) and i’m in the men’s suits department trying to find the last few items on my list. one of the guys who works in suits comes in to get situated and is pleased he doesn’t have to look for all 22 items himself on a busy weekend, offers to help me look for those last few. and of course i’m glad for the help, but ask him ‘you’re punched in right? you need to get paid for every minute’.
and he says that it really wouldn’t matter, because as suits is a mostly commission department, meaning the base pay is lower than other employees/such that technically HE OWES THE STORE MONEY UNTIL HE MAKES MORE SALES.
and yeah, commission employees do have the chance to make way better than the other associates if they have a good sales day, but…
the thing is, he’s expected to do more than sales. he does signage, markdowns, fulfillment on days when people like me are assigned to other areas, opening credit cards for the store, cleaning up the fitting room…he could do all that and if he didn’t make enough sales for the day he could technically be in the hole.
