In my Gender, Sexuality and Colonialism class we talk about how class, race, and gender are all social constructs that are inextricably interwoven with each other and all part of the complex toxic ‘supremacy’ ideology. You cannot deal with each one separately since they are all facets of the same thing. The root of the problem is humankind’s greed for power and need to justify the subjugation of other humans.
The root of the problem is capitalism.
*racial capitalism* its evolved now, our ideology needs to be updated, too.
it hasn’t evolved – capitalism has always been racial. the amerikkkan capitalist system has always depended on the primitive accumulation of indigenous land and gratuitous violence against black bodies. capitalist development has always depended on the extraction of resources and surplus value from the colonized world, and as such it has always depended upon the racialization of subaltern bodies. the end of slavery hasn’t changed the fact that black folks are still made to constitute a pool of surplus labor power – the methods of extraction and exploitation have changed but the structure is the same.
Reblogging for the last comment. See, United States’ underdevelopment of black communities and its mass incarceration of black people.
Here’s a great intro into the topic. How Capitalism Underdeveloped Black America. Manning Marable originally published this decades ago, but the new edition is from 2015.
